Project Overview
Cadreatech Engineering Professionals were engaged to provide civil and structural engineering services for the Tannery Equipment Support and Covered Shed Project in Narok County for ENSDA. The project was implemented as part of an industrial development initiative aimed at strengthening tannery operations through the installation of specialized processing equipment and the construction of a purpose-built industrial shed.
The assignment required a high level of technical coordination between structural design, imported machinery specifications, and on-site construction activities to ensure accuracy, safety, and long-term operational efficiency.
Scope of Works and Engineering Requirements
The scope of works included the structural design and supervision of reinforced concrete foundations and support systems for heavy tannery equipment, as well as the design and construction of a large-span covered industrial shed. The key components included support structures for polypropylene drums, a fleshing machine, a 20-tonne soaking drum, and a covered shed measuring 15 metres in clear span and 50 metres in length.
The engineering design accounted for heavy static and dynamic equipment loads, operational vibration, installation tolerances, and maintenance requirements, all while ensuring compatibility with industrial processing workflows.
Structural Design and Imported Equipment Integration
A critical aspect of the project was the installation of specialized tannery equipment imported from China. This required careful interpretation of manufacturer shop drawings, equipment load data, anchorage details, and installation requirements.
Cadreatech’s structural engineering role focused on translating these technical inputs into accurate foundation layouts, reinforcement detailing, and holding-down bolt configurations. Precise setting out was essential to ensure correct alignment of the equipment during installation and commissioning.
The structural foundations were designed to safely support operational loads while minimizing vibration and ensuring long-term performance under continuous industrial use.
Industrial Covered Shed Structure
The covered shed was designed as a long-span industrial structure with a 15-metre clear span and a total length of 50 metres, providing unobstructed internal space for equipment installation and operation. The structural system was coordinated to allow efficient movement of materials, safe operation of machinery, and protection from environmental exposure.
The shed design considered roof loading, wind actions, durability, and ease of maintenance, ensuring suitability for the demanding conditions typical of tannery operations.
Construction Supervision and Contract Administration
Cadreatech Engineering Professionals provided construction supervision throughout the project to ensure that all works were executed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, and engineering standards. Supervision activities included verification of foundation dimensions, reinforcement placement, concrete quality, and accuracy of equipment setting out.
Contract administration services included measurement of completed works, preparation of payment certificates, and coordination between the client, contractors, and equipment suppliers to maintain progress and technical compliance.
Project Outcome and Engineering Value
The successful completion of the project demonstrates the importance of precise structural engineering input in industrial developments involving imported equipment. Through accurate interpretation of shop drawings and close construction supervision, the project achieved zero rework, reduced construction costs, and timely installation of all tannery equipment.
The completed tannery shed and equipment support structures provide a reliable, durable, and efficient operational environment. This project highlights Cadreatech’s capability in delivering structural engineering, construction supervision, and industrial infrastructure consultancy services for specialized facilities in Kenya.
